September 2022 Reflections

I don't know about where you live, but here in California September came in hot! Temperatures reached 116 degrees, breaking records from the late 1800's. I have never felt heat like that in my life. I honestly wondered if the tires were going to melt off the car. As you may have seen in the news, temps that high put a strain on California's power grid, prompting a state-wide alert advising residents to conserve energy or there would be rolling blackouts. Well the golden state banned together and within 5 minutes the power grid was relieved and mass blackouts were avoided. This story warmed my heart (pun intended). It is a wonderful reminder that when people come together and remember their collective power, great things can happen! Another example of people coming together was yesterday's National Day of Service. The Federal Holiday was created to both honor and remember those lost on September 11, 2001 and to recreate the feeling of unity and acts of service throughout the country that followed the tragic event 21 years ago. My daughter's Girl Scout Troop volunteered to make activity bags for our local retirement center, including personal notes of well wishes. The positive energy and sense of community was palatable as the girls crafted and created for those in need. This month I offer the idea to reflect on how your actions impact the collective...how are you helping the greater good? Perhaps you recycle and compost, drive an electric car, volunteer your time, donate to a charity, sit on a local board or council, support community events, support local businesses, and/or speak up for those who need a voice. Remember that even a positive outlook, a smile to a stranger, or a wave to a neighbor all contribute to our collective happiness in a meaningful way. Thank you for all you do. With a grateful heart, Kristen
